Bristol began to be a city to the Gloucestershire aspect with the Avon, but since it grew it prolonged throughout the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "which the city of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be independent from the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ...
